Ledger Getting Started Hub — ledger.com/start™

A colorful, accessible one-page presentation to help new users set up their Ledger hardware wallet and learn best practices.

Overview

This presentation explains how to get started with Ledger hardware wallets via the official Getting Started Hub at ledger.com/start™. It covers unboxing, initializing, choosing a PIN, writing down the recovery phrase, connecting with Ledger Live, and day-to-day usage. The goal is to give new users confidence and a checklist they can follow step-by-step.

What you'll achieve

Within a short session you'll learn to:

  • Safely set up your Ledger device and create a secure PIN.
  • Securely back up and store your recovery phrase.
  • Install and use Ledger Live to manage accounts.
  • Recognize basic phishing and social engineering attacks.

Why the hardware wallet matters

Hardware wallets store private keys offline — they keep your crypto safe by never exposing the keys to the internet. That physical separation drastically reduces the attack surface compared to custodial or hot-wallet alternatives.

Audience

This guide is written for beginners and for anyone migrating funds from exchanges or software wallets who wants a stronger security posture.

Setup: Step-by-step

1. Unbox and inspect

Check the packaging seal and make sure the device is new and intact. Ledger devices ship with tamper-evident packaging; if you suspect tampering, contact official support before proceeding.

2. Power and initialize

Connect the device using the supplied cable. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose the language and create a secure, memorable 4–8 digit PIN. Avoid simple sequences or repeated digits.

3. Recovery phrase

Write down the recovery phrase exactly as shown. This is the only backup of your private keys. Use the provided recovery card (or a purpose-built metal backup) and keep it offline in a safe, private place. Never take a photo or store it digitally.

4. Install Ledger Live

From the Getting Started Hub, download Ledger Live (desktop or mobile). Use the official link in the sidebar. Ledger Live is the companion app used to install crypto apps on the device and to manage accounts securely.

5. Install apps and add accounts

Use Ledger Live to install the apps for the blockchains you want to use (for example Bitcoin, Ethereum). Once installed, create or add accounts and confirm addresses on the device before sending funds.

Security best practices

Keep your recovery offline

Never enter your recovery phrase into a website or app. Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. If prompted, stop — you are being targeted by a scam.

Be wary of phishing

Double-check URLs and bookmarks. Only use official links saved from the Getting Started Hub. Confirm addresses directly on your Ledger device when receiving or sending funds.

Use a metal backup where possible

Paper can degrade, burn, or tear. Metal backups are fireproof and corrosion-resistant — consider them for long-term storage of recovery words.

Common troubleshooting

Device not recognized

Try a different cable/USB port and ensure Ledger Live is up to date. Reboot your computer and check that no other wallet software is interfering.

Forgot PIN

If you forget your PIN you must reset the device and restore from your recovery phrase. For safety, always test your recovery phrase by performing a restore on a spare device if available.

Lost recovery phrase

If your recovery phrase is lost, there is no method to recover funds. This underscores the importance of secure backup practices.

Contact support

Use the official support resources in the sidebar if you encounter hardware defects or verified account/security concerns.
